I have an AO Smith 50 gallon with the electronic display. I initially had to replace the lower element due to limescale. Once I did that and cleaned out the sediment, I had an e02 error code on the panel. I replaced the upper element, and then replaced the thermostat as tech support said that might be causing the problem. I am still getting the error code. I unplugged the electronic panel, and the unit functions for a few hours when I turn off the breaker, wait several minutes then turn it on again. However, a few hours later I get the blinking red light (2 flashes) and the unit stops heating water. The red high limit button is NOT tripped. I have tested the power at the thermostat and the elements with a multi meter and they all check out fine.
Any thoughts? I am at a loss.

Predicting how long your water heater will last can be difficult — depending on the model and fuel source, its lifetime could be anywhere between 8 and 20 years. Common conventional electric water heaters tend to last 10–15 years, and typically come with a standard six-year warranty.

Many of the AO Smith tanks have the date stamped on the label next to the model and serial number. For the tanks that do not display an actual date, it’s also part of the actual serial number. The picture of the tank on the right is serial # GA-240, which means this tank was build in 1997.

If you don’t know the age of your current unit, it’s worth checking to see if you’re nearing time for replacement. It pays to prepare before your water heater gives up or fails, which can be inconvenient (at best) or catastrophic (at worst).

Since finding the date of installation isn’t always straightforward, we came up with the handy guide below to help you decode your water heater’s serial number.

Check for a manufacturer label on the side of your water heater — this should include the installation date.

If the label is missing, or the installation date is not listed, you can use the serial number to determine the age of your unit.

Serial number formats vary by manufacturer, with the installationdate placed differently in each case. Check the brand name on your water heaterand then use the following guide to determine the age of your unit:

Bradford White

Bradford White’s serial numbers are a little less straightforward. The year of manufacture is noted by the first letter of the serial number, and the month is the second letter.
